The case describes the evolution of the Indonesian state and Indonesian politics from the beginning of the Dutch occupation in the early 17th century down to the present day. The main focus is on the period since the fall of the authoritarian Suharto regime in 1998. It identifies and portrays the challenges facing both the incumbent government in the wake of the countrys profound economic and political crisis in 1997-98 and the consolidation of democratic politics in the country.
