Summary

Stratex is a European multi-national company facing some common, but challenging problems in the management of the information systems (IS) function. This case describes the tensions and challenges faced by John Gates, the new CIO of Stratex while trying to effectively use IS to further the business success of the organization. The needs for top management leadership and effective management of organizational changes related to IS projects are also illustrated.

Teaching objectives

The primary pedagogical objective of this case is to serve as an introduction to important issues faced by senior managers with regard to the management of the IS function in large organizations. Topics addressed in this case include: (a) approaches for linking an organization's IS strategy to business strategic planning; (b) structuring of the IS function for business success; and (c) impact of top management leadership on the effective management of the IS function.
