Summary

This case is a role-play between a director of a consulting company and an associate during an annual performance appraisal. During the meeting, the director has the challenging task of giving some unexpected negative feedback to an otherwise high-performing associate who comes to the meeting expecting to hear nothing but good news. Can the director give the feedback effectively?

Teaching objectives

Help students understand, through an active simulation, how to both give and receive positive and negative feedback. Highlight psychological factors such as the illusion of transparency, framing, and the negativity bias that can complicate feedback situations. Introduce the concept of blind spots and the Johari Window to understand why giving/receiving feedback can be so difficult.
