Yvon Chouinard, an accomplished climber, started Patagonia as a venture that sold high-quality clothing for outdoor adventures. Despite being a reluctant businessman, he went on to build Patagonia as a successful mission-driven company that became a global role model for sustainable business. Over the decades, Yvon made numerous strategic decisions that were grounded in ethical and sustainability considerations but ended up helping rather than hurting Patagonia’s business too. Nevertheless, Yvon was worried that Patagonia might not retain its DNA if he and his family were to finally exit the company through a traditional route like a strategic sale or an IPO. Was there a good way to address this concern?

Teaching objectives

This case helps facilitate a discussion on how an entrepreneur can develop and maintain a strong competitive advantage, while also staying true to their values and being authentic in their sustainability mission. In particular, it examines how Yvon Chouinard built Patagonia as an outdoor apparel company that focused on quality rather than following fashion trends, while also educating its customers on environmental issues and guiding them towards more responsible consumption. Analysis of this case should help the students appreciate that maximizing one’s impact as a business leader requires integrating societal considerations into all components of their company’s business model. It also provides an opportunity to discuss how a venture might be able to preserve its mission as its scales and what it might take for mainstream companies to also become more authentic in their sustainability efforts.
