The case examines the evolution of a family-controlled Brazilian agribusiness into one of the world’s most efficient and professionally managed large-scale farming companies. Originating from the SLC Group, founded in 1945, the company developed a distinctive industrial approach to agriculture, emphasizing operational discipline, technology adoption, data-driven decision-making, and strong corporate governance. Its growth has progressed through three phases: farmland acquisition; post-IPO expansion through leased land and partnerships; and maximizing productivity, profitability, and value creation through innovation and precision agriculture.
It highlights how SLC Agrícola built a scalable and standardized farming model centred on soybeans, corn, and cotton, while expanding into complementary activities such as seed production and crop–livestock integration. It also explores the company’s leadership in sustainability, governance, and ESG practices.
The case considers the strategic challenges facing SLC Agrícola as it enters its next stage of growth. The company must determine how to expand while preserving its culture of financial discipline and operational excellence. Key questions include whether growth should be pursued through land acquisition, leasing, or joint ventures; whether the company should diversify into adjacent businesses; and how sustainability can be leveraged not only as a risk-management tool but also as a source of long-term value creation and competitive advantage.
The case will show how a company from an emerging market became a global leader in an industry where most leaders originate from developed economies. SLC has grown in an economically and politically volatile environment, which has led it to be flexible, agile, and resilient.
After discussing the case, students will be able to analyse large-scale agribusiness models and how industrial management principles can be applied to agriculture. They will also gain an understanding of managing a large agricultural company amidst the global challenges of climate change, geopolitics, and increased ESG pressures. The case also enables a discussion around Brazil’s role in global food security and the industry’s potential growth avenues.
