Aprisium was founded by Raghav Narayan, an experienced auto industry executive, to commercialize technology for water safety testing. The case follows the venture from the discovery that the licensed technology was flawed, through a period of developing the technology and autonomous water testing units, to its current success and growth potential. Aprisium now faces choices on whether to emphasize testing of industrial wastewater, data centre (cloud) water testing, sales of big data from the testing activity, and which geographies to emphasize.
The case tells a common story of how new high-tech ventures face problems with technology readiness levels that are insufficient for commercialization, making high-speed and low-cost technology and product development necessary. It reveals how industrial internet of things can be a cost saver and a business opportunity. It invites students to consider the direction and scale of expanding a venture that is now healthy and has significant growth potential.
